Known by local Indians as the "mountain of rumbling and trembling," Irazu, the highest peak in the Central Volcanic Range and the largest volcano in Costa Rica, soars 11,260 feet above sea level. On the climb up, the vegetation swiftly changes from farms to primary and white oak secondary forests, to the bleak tableland at the summit-an astonishing moon-like landscape!

On your way down, we drive through our former capital, Cartago, where we stop at the magnificent Basilica de Los Angeles, our most important church.

We then go to Lankester Gardens, a showcase of diverse local flora habitats. The large orchid collection, in particular, is guaranteed to enchant flower lovers.

Our last stop is the historical town of Orosi, surrounded by mountains covered in coffee plantations and watered by the impressive Reventazon River. Here you can walk into the 250-year-old church, which housed the first colonial Franciscan monks and feel the way the first Spanish inhabitants did. Don´t miss this full day combination!
